Belvoir Castle is a historic castle and a stately home in Leicestershire, near the town of Grantham. The seat of the Manners family, the 11th Duke and Duchess of Rutland. The name ‘Belvoir’ is French, what means ‘beautiful view’. Surprisingly, it is pronounced today as ‘beaver’. This is because the native Anglo-Saxon population could not pronounce properly the French name and simply called it ‘Beaver Castle’.

The Belvoir Castle’s history dates back to 1067. I bet you didn’t know that Belvoir Castle has been built and rebuilt on the same spot four times! The construction of the first castle, ideally located for a fortified castle, started in 1067. But by 1464, the Castle was nearly ruined. The similar thing happened to the second and the third buildings. The fourth castle you see today was built between 1801-1832 for the 5th Duke and Duchess of Rutland. Belvoir Gardens were designed and landscaped nearly the same time.

There are seven different walking trails through formal gardens and woodland: Spiral Walk, Rose Garden Walk, Japanese Woodland Walk, Duchess Garden Walk, Hermit’s Garden Walk, The Duke’s Walk, and Frog Hollow. And dogs are allowed everywhere!
