Chipping Campden, a market town with its own unique character in Gloucestershire.

Address: Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire GL55

Chipping Campden, a charming Cotswolds market town in Gloucestershire, is a great destination for dog lovers who enjoy leisurely walks with their four-legged companions through historic towns and villages where little has changed.

The name Chipping Campden derives from two Old English words: ‘Chipping’ meaning ‘market’ and ‘Campden’ meaning ‘field in the valley’. From the late 13th to the early 15th centuries, Chipping Camden was a prosperous market town, a home to successful wool merchants. One of them was William Grevel, named ‘the Flower of the Wool Merchants of England’. In 1380, he built a house which now is the oldest building in the town. It was one of the first houses that had chimneys instead of simply holes in the roof. The Grade I listed Grevel’s House is one of the few and finest examples of 14th century architecture. You might be surprised to know that Chipping Campden has a very high density of listed buildings in the UK, with over 250 in the town!

In the late 16th and 17th centuries, when the export of wool gradually declined, Chipping Campden turned to silk and agriculture, still being a thriving and active small market town.

Today lots of people come to Chipping Campden to walk along the High Street, one of the most beautiful in the Cotswolds because of its historic buildings mostly built from honey-coloured Cotswold stone and hardly touched by the centuries. There is also a good selection of dog-friendly hotels and cottages in the town, as well as pubs and restaurants which are happy to open their arms to you and your dog.
