The Cotswold Wildlife Park & Gardens, a perfect weekend destination for paws and people in Oxfordshire.
Address: Bradwell Grove, Burford, Oxfordshire, OX18 4JP.
Looking for a fun and relaxing day out in nature with your furry friend? Dog-friendly Cotswold Wildlife Park is the perfect spot. The park is set in 160 acres of stunning, well-maintained grounds and exhibits over 260 different species of animals including Chapman’s zebra, giant anteater, giraffe, Southern white rhino, Asiatic lion, Bactrian camel, giant tortoise, penguin and many other fascinating creatures, like various primates, reptiles and exotic birds. What did we like the most? We were thrilled to see graceful giraffes up close and learn about their behaviour and feeding habits. They are our absolute favourite! We also loved the meticulously designed gardens and green spaces, with lots of palms and exotic plants.
I bet you didn’t know, but Cotswold Wildlife Park is the largest privately owned zoological collection in the UK. It was opened in 1970 by John Heyworth, who inherited the manor house and 3,000 acres of surrounding grounds. Before it was turned into a zoo, the place was rented out for 20 years (1949 – 1969) to Oxford Hospital, providing medical services to the community. It was an inevitable measure to generate a steady income to cover taxes and restore the deteriorating property. Although, that money wasn’t enough to make John Heyworth’s dream come true, so he borrowed £40,000, a huge amount of money at that time, to buy the animals and set up the park. He also managed to attract volunteers to work on an unpaid basis until he had the cash flow to pay them. John’s wife, Sue, supported him all the way along the line. Although she never really liked animals because of a small incident when a cat had a wee on her leg when she was a child.
How long should you allow for your visit? We spent the whole day at the Cotswold Wildlife Park, and, honestly, it wasn’t enough. So be sure to allow at least 4 hours. If you expect to have something special, don’t miss the penguin feeding that takes place every day at 11:00 and 15:00 in the Walled Garden. Or lemur feeding talk at 12:00 to find out more about the fascinating creatures.
Today, the Cotswold Wildlife Park is one of the UK’s most popular wildlife parks, attracting thousands of visitors each year. The park has its own railway, the Cotswold Wildlife Park Railway, that was opened in 1975 and this is a good way to observe various animal enclosures and the park’s lush landscapes. Ticket prices are £2 for adults and £1 for children. Dogs are allowed on the train as well. So, pack a picnic, grab your leash, and head to the Cotswold Wildlife Park for a tail-wagging adventure!
