Welcome to this month’s round-up of dog-friendly news, where we explore the latest trends, campaigns and cultural highlights celebrating life with our four-legged companions. From the rise of pet-first travel to community initiatives and inspiring adoption stories, it’s clear that dogs are shaping how we live, holiday and connect. Here’s what’s making headlines in the world of dog-friendly living in 2026.
1. ‘Pet-first’ travel trend
Tripadvisor has released its Trendcast 2026 report, forecasting a year defined by purposeful travel, with a strong focus on pet-friendly experiences.
According to the report, bookings for dog-friendly experiences have risen by more than 260% compared with the previous year. The platform describes this sharp increase as part of a growing ‘pet-first’ movement, with travellers increasingly organising their holidays around what suits their pets.
2. Make the New Forest more dog-friendly
The New Forest Dog Owners Group (NFDOG) has launched a campaign to encourage more shops, pubs and other businesses across the New Forest to become dog-friendly.
While many premises already welcome dogs, the group says there is often little visible signage to make this clear, and some businesses remain hesitant due to concerns about issues such as dogs fighting or the need to provide water. The initiative aims to reassure owners that most dog walkers are responsible and respectful. Plans include creating an online directory of dog-friendly businesses, distributing “We are dog friendly” window stickers and sharing case studies highlighting the commercial benefits.
3. The Dog House is searching for new participants
The Dog House is on the lookout for participants for its 2026 series. Produced by Five Mile Films, the Channel 4 programme follows rescue dogs from Woodgreen Pets Charity as they are carefully matched with prospective owners.
Applications are now open, with filming set to continue throughout the year. The production team is keen to hear from families, couples, single people and first-time dog owners who are considering adopting a rescue dog and are willing to share their journey on screen. The series shines a light on the powerful bond between people and their canine companions, focusing on those ready to offer a loving, permanent home to a dog in need.
4. Pets & Their People: New Exhibition in Oxford
A new exhibition opens at Weston Library from 11 March to 27 September 2026. Admission is free, with no tickets required.
The exhibition delves into the fascinating relationship between humans and their pets, asking why we welcome tame wolves into our homes or enjoy the company of wild cats on our laps. Featuring treasures from the Bodleian Library, the show includes illustrations, poetry and stories Visitors will be encouraged to consider how the bond between humans and animals has developed over thousands of years, and whether it is we who domesticate our pets, or they who reconnect us with our wilder instincts.
Together, these dog-friendly news show how the bond between people and their dogs continues to influence travel, local business and the arts across the UK.
