Minack Theatre, a spectacular open-air theatre in Cornwall.

Address: Porthcurno, Cornwall, TR19 6JU.

Come with us to one of the most unusual and atmospheric dog-friendly places, the iconic Minack Theatre, which is 4 miles from Land’s End in Cornwall. This unique and open-air venue is setting on the side of a cliff and offers a breathtaking view.

The Minack, what means ‘a rocky place’, is a working theatre and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Cornwall. When there are no performances on, the theatre is open for visitors (and dogs!).

The fascinating story of Minack Theatre started in 1929. Its creation is inextricably linked with one remarkable woman, Rowena Cade. One day, she offered her cliff-side garden as a stage to a local theatre company. After a successful debut, she decided to build a proper theatre, supported by a small group of like-minded people, including her gardener, Billy Rawling. It is no exaggeration to say that Minack Theatre was literally built by hand, without using some heavy machinery. Lots of structures of the Theatre are made from concrete mixed with sand that Rowena brought from the beach in sacks. The Theatre was her brainchild and she kept working on it until her eighties. If you want to know more about Rowena’s life and the theatre, don’t miss the exhibition which tells the story through photographs, artworks and artefacts. It even includes the screwdriver with which Rowena carved words and patterns into the concrete.

Some facts about the Minack Theatre: over a quarter of a million visitors each year; over 200 live performances, including plays, musicals, and opera; thousands of people coming to experience the magic of live performances.
