Oxford, a ‘city of dreaming spires’ in Oxfordshire.
We love Oxford. To be honest, this is one of our favorite cities in the UK. The city where we would like to live and work. Despite the fact that Oxford is not very dog-friendly. Wandering around narrow cobbled streets, you won’t see lots of dog owners like it would be in Whitby, Lincoln or Chester. You are unlikely to find a pet shop in the city centre. Finding a dog-friendly pub or a restaurant can be a daunting task as well.
But on the other hand, there are so many famous places to explore in Oxford on foot. The city is full of interesting spots, hidden corners and beautiful honey-colored buildings. The Bodleian Library, the Bridge of Sighs, the Radcliffe Camera and many others. Take your time and enjoy the ‘city of dreaming spires’.
Tips & Tricks if you plan a trip to Oxford with a dog:
1. Parking Pear Tree Park & Ride
Address: 21 Lakeside, Oxford OX2 8JF
The cheapest and the easiest option is to use Park & Ride. We used Pear Tree Park & Ride with Combined Park + Bus Tickets for only £5.00 (two adults) for the whole day. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the city centre by bus.
2. Guided Tour from Footprints Tour
Meeting point: 7 Broad street, outside Watsons of Oxford
The best way to explore the city’s history and heritage. We highly recommend 2 Hour Free Oxford Walking Tour from Footprints Tour. The tour starts at 11 am and covers the most famous sites of Oxford. Dogs are welcome, because you don’t go inside buildings. Our guide, a current student of the University of Oxford, was absolutely amazing. The Free Oxford Tour is solely funded by tips, and guides definitely deserve it!
Availability
Monday to Sunday, 11:00 am & 2:00 pm
Admission fee
Free, but you can tip your guide at the end of the tour
3. It’s time for walkies at Christ Church Meadow!
Address: St. Aldates, Oxford OX1 1DP
Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed to be on the grounds of colleges. Christ Church Meadow is an exception. This is a large area in the heart of Oxford, owned and maintained by Christ Church. That open space has been used for sport, recreation and entertainment activities. This is an ideal place for leisurely strolls and reflections.
4. Lunch at Paul
Address: 138 High Street, Oxford OX1 4DN
To make your day sweeter, go to Paul, a French bakery and cafe, near to Christ Church. They serve the best hot chocolate (in our humble opinion), which is very thick and velvety, and delicious macarons. Ask the staff if dogs are allowed, but usually they say ‘yes’.
